Accessibility for Visually Impaired in Word Press
There is some excellent but sometimes dated information on helping make your WordPress site more accessible to the visually impaired, physically impaired and those using screen readers. Having the information in a Database and one that allows multiple templates should definitely go a long way to making things easier.

Church Signage Issue
Exterior sign age is an issue for St. A's. Currently looking into the various options. If we go standard wood/metal we may need a triangle or two sided option so it can be seen from traffic driving down Telegraph better. An electronic sign at this point would be preferable as it could scroll upcoming events and say a message when services were on.
Preservation of the historic character also needs to be considered as well as an signange ordinance the city may have. They hate electronic signs in downtown.

WordPress Optimization WordPress Codex
WordPress Optimization WordPress Codex
Now the WP is installed we need to begin to look into making page load times speedier. Right now time lag to load the first page seems too much. Since we are making significant changes -- we may need to hold off on some optimizations but put them on the schedule to do once the layout of the site/graphics have stopped changing so much.

WordPress Mu Installed!
Ed has installed Wordpress Mu the Multi-User / Multi-blog version on our DeamHost server/account. Will be moving forward with more WordPress work next week after completing the updating of the member information into ACS.
There is a long list of Plug-ins to install and configure ontop of issues of themes -- plus all the content and how to best organize it. Decision points and tons of cut and paste work will be coming soon.

Email This Page/Event/Post/Sermon/Blog Entry Feature
Really want to empower web site readers to be able to easily share items on the church web site. Sociable plug-in may do this -- but want to make sure it is clear to every visitor and attached to all types of content types whenerever possible. So "Email This"/"Share" page (or event or news item or sermon or blog post, etc.) that triggers a normal users email mailto: function or possibly records the entry into a trackable database.

From what I can glean from their site -- looks like it could be a white label install of WrodPress Mu with a bunch of plug-ins & templates that churches would want. If not functionality looks close to that....
They are possibly based on "LightCMS" - http://www.speaklight.com/

Is Your Church Tech Savvy?
Is Your Church Tech Savvy?
Here’s a quick list of what comes to mind:
- Overall willingness to look for technological solutions to everyday problems
- Has an interactive website that’s more than just a brochure for the church
- Takes online donations via the church website
- Takes online registrations and payments for events; even has an (up-to-date) events calendar on the church website
- Uses some form of web-based church management software (ChMS) that allows church staff, lay leaders, and congregants to connect online and manage the church all in one place
- Registers and checks in kids through their ChMS for maximum security
- Provides timely podcasts and/or video podcasts online to extend reach of the church
- Has a Facebook or other social media presence such as Twitter feed, MySpace, etc. and uses it to connect with members
- Provides small group lists online for people to sign up for; perhaps even allows people to view lists of current volunteer positions in need of filling

Single Sign-on for Online ChMS & outside tools
One of the things I'm looking for is knowing where a vendor stands on supporting Open ID or Google sign-in so that users redirected from our online site would not have to sign in with a different system, user id/pw if at all possible.

Expensive tool need to look at further
http://www.unifyer.com/church/default.asp
Some churches are using this to unify communications. Not sure on the exact functionality and what if any other tools out there may already exist or might be built-into an online crm or ChMS system. If it is just a one-way tool to post to social network sites -- there are free ones of those.

Church Marketing 101 Book
The Book || The official website of Richard Reising
This "must read" (we're not just saying that--look at what others are saying below) is a handbook to building a contageous church. Whether you are a marketing guru or novice, you will find it inspiring, encouraging, and hopeful. It’s everything you’ve been secretly thinking about church since you’ve been at church, but it’s also the solutions that churches are needing. In this book, Richard breaks down marketing principles and brand strategy by offering fresh insight into what both creates and hinders church growth. Built on a strong biblical foundation, he reveals how small changes can have a big impact on growth. Strategic marketing can set your church apart, creating the momentum to change the life of your church and your community for eternity. Bottom line: it’s worth the read.

Church Software, Web Based | Church Community Builder, CCB
Church Software, Web Based | Church Community Builder, CCB
Another option for a web based community with ChMS like functions. They are trying to be more friendly/open to Twitter, etc. Some of the twitter post out functionality could be made by using the "email to post" option direct w/twitter but also with other providers that repost to multiple sources simultaneously and they too accept items via "email to post" then syndicate across multiple sites.
Once again, Church Community Builder has gone and created new, innovative technology tools that integrate their web-based church management software with the ever-changing outside world of communications technology.
Today, I helped them announce a new feature that combines text messaging with Twitter. Who would have thought? This is a great idea -I’m not sure that anyone else out there is doing this. Here are the basics:
CCB Twext™ Offers the Following Benefits:
Group Texting: In addition to email and mail merge, every Group Leader has the option to communicate with their Group participants via Text Messaging.
Twitter™ Integration: If a group within the church has its own Twitter account, the Group Leader can add that account to their CCB Group. When utilized, a Text Message sent to the group will also immediately post as a Tweet on the group Twitter™ feed. This further extends the reach of the Text Message to those who may not receive text messages but are a member of the Twitter group.
Member Controlled: Group members have full control over their ability to receive text messages. They must proactively edit their CCB profile before receiving them. This ensures people don’t end up paying for text messages they do not wish to receive.

Checklist / Tips for 70+ things to consider in a church web site
http://www.internetevangelismday.com/church-site-tips.php
- Most church websites are designed entirely for their members, or unwittingly exclude non-Christians because of their choice of language and content.
More | Extra - A good church site must communicate with three very different target groups:
More | Extra - This ‘three-way stretch’ is a challenge, but can be achieved.
More | Extra - Take time to consider the needs and viewpoints of non-Christians.
More | Extra - Avoid all ‘churchy’ jargon and ‘Christianese’ language throughout the site, especially on the homepage.
More | Extra - Non-Christians may have negative images of Christians: boring, killjoys, judgmental, etc.
More | Extra - Christian outreach often fails because Christians do ‘megaphone proclamation’ from behind the protecting walls of their ‘ghetto’.
More | 2 - A primary task of the website is to convince non-Christians of these four things:
More | Extra - Do not think of your church site in isolation, merely as a stand-alone online brochure.
More - Church is people: the home page should have at least one photo of a church member. This is absolutely foundational to good communication, yet infrequently done.
More - Internal pages on the site can include photos of both outside and inside of the church building.
More - Include some ‘meet our members’ pages.
More - All links, page titles, and sub-headings should sound enticing.
More - If testimonies are used, they should be completely free of religious jargon, exaggeration and sentimentality.
More | Extra - Consider a ‘New to this site?’ visitors link on your homepage. This enables you to offer a particular welcome to an outsider.
More | Extra - Games and fun stuff are attractive and make a site sticky.
More | Extra1 | 2 - Consider adding some ‘bridging’ pages to the site.
More | Extra1 | 2 - Involve your church members in praying and supporting the web design team, and ‘owning’ the site.
More - Demonstrate a specific welcome for people with disability.
More - Summing up: the overall impression of the site must of a gentle, loving, enticing welcome. But...
More - Sadly, it is this issue of welcome and assimilation that frequently breaks down.
More | Extra1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5 - The context of your country, area and culture may lead you to apply these principles in different ways. Analyzehow some very effective church sites are using them: Brandywine | Southside | Bridge | King’s Church | Atlanta |North Branch | Questions
- Church websites are not the only form of web evangelism.
More | ExtraDesign
- Your church site will be the first point of contact for many people in your community. First impressions count.
More | Extra - Do not place too much information on your homepage.
More - And all important information should be ‘above the fold’.
More - Avoid ‘churchy’ graphics – open Bibles, stained glass windows, doves, candles. And appeals for money.
More - Use at least one graphic of a person’s face on the homepage.
More - A 3-column layout is often the most suitable for a church site.
More - Never use an introductory ‘splash page’.
More - Every page should display the same overall appearance, with the same navigation options in the same place.
More | Extra - All links, menu options and buttons should be clearly identified as ‘active’ – they should change color when hovered.
More - If you use Javascript for any effects, ensure everything on the site still works for those with Javascript disabled.
More - Don’t use frames for site design.
More - Learn how to use ‘include’ files – a great time-saver.
More - Also learn how to use CSS.
More | Extra - Use colors correctly: understand how to choose a color scheme, how colors relate to each other, and what mood they communicate.
More | Extra - Don’t use patterned graphic backgrounds behind body text.
More - Consider a ‘liquid’ page design: the content should flow naturally and fit together, at any screen resolution (i.e. size of the monitor screen measured in pixels) or reasonable font resize by a user.
More - And don’t put ‘best viewed at resolution’ or ‘best viewed in browser Y’ on your website.
More - Don’t include ‘mailto’ email addresses in plain coding on the site.
More - Your site need not be large or complex.
More - Don’t leave out-of-date content online.
More - Use several people to proof-read for typos and poor grammar.
More | Extra - Make your pages printer-friendly.
More | Extra - Take time to assess your target audience, their interests, needs and circumstances.
More | Extra - Not least, pray – both for planning and implementation.
More | ExtraYour church webmaster/team
- A church webmaster or team needs a clear job description.
More The church should encourage the webmaster or web team in their back-room role. - What if there is no-one technical in your church, to take on the webmaster role? You can use a pre-designed template system. These also answer the problem of what to do if the only technical person in the church moves on, leaving a website that no-one really knows how to update. Follow ‘Extra’ for a listing of providers and how to assess the features they offer.
More | Extra - A larger church site can benefit from ‘CMS’ – Content Management which enables multiple users to keep the site updated.
More | Extra - Learn from others. Help is only a mouse-click away.
MoreReadability
- For normal body text, use black font on a white or near-white background.
More - Do not used fixed font size in your coding.
More - Therefore make all font sizes relative, so that users can resize text if they wish.
More - Choice of fonts is important. The Verdana font is designed for computer monitors, and is widely perceived as the most readable for body text. (Note how upper-case I is distinguished from number 1 or lower-case l.) Test it yourself: view this page in helvetica | arial |
default sans-serif | default serif | times new roman | restore verdana.
More | Extra - Understand how to make your site user-friendly to color-blind and visually-impaired visitors. color tester. More
Testing
- Test your site from a technical viewpoint in different browsers, and at different screen resolutions.
More - Also test your site with real first-time users. Remember, you know your site backwards. They do not.
More | Extra - Find non-Christians to critique your site. Yes, non-Christians! They are your primary target audience.
MoreNavigation and usability
- Good navigation allows a first-time non-technical visitor to move round your site easily.
More - Good navigation gives visitors constant clues to fulfill the vital requirements: ‘Where am I, where have I been, and where can I go’. Many websites, of all types, fail to be effective because they lack a good intuitive navigation system.
More - Do not offer too many links in your navigation menu.
More - You can use ‘paper prototyping’ to plan different ways of structuring links within the site.
More | Extra - Make sure your pages download quickly.
MoreBeing found – online and physically
- The title tag in the head of your homepage, which should contain the full name of the church, plus town, state and country.
More | Extra - Your church name, street, town, area/state, country and phone number should also appear in unabbreviated form in a small font in the footer of your homepage (or preferably every page).
More - Submit your church site to main search engines and secular directories.
More | Extra - Make every page of your site a logical entry point to your site.
More - Framed pages present problems to being listed in search engines.
More - Ensure the church URL is easy to remember. Take every opportunity to give it a high profile.
More - Make full use of press releases to local newspapers and radio stations. These should always include your URL. Larger churches can consider publishing regular news using an ‘RSS’ feed.
More | Extra1| 2 - Include clear directions for finding the church. Give details of parking, public transport links, and a map.
MoreResponding to emails
- Ensure that every day, someone reads incoming emails to the church.
More - Some people may be emailing for help on serious life issues.
More | Extra - It need not necessarily be the pastor or pastor’s secretary that does this, especially out of hours.

What features does a church website need on its homepage?
16 August 2006 in Christian, Christian websites, Church, Church Websites, Church blog, Church blogging | by David
Having established some of the differences between a straight blog and a church website, what specific features of a church website do we need to incorporate on the front page?
- Welcoming: A clear welcome to greet visitors, in much the same way visitors would be welcomed on a Sunday morning.
- Main meeting times: People will not be able to visit the church without these. First time visitors will come on the Sunday service not Wednesday homegroup, so the details for the other activities can be placed on another page.
- Contact details: It is important that the contact details for the church (address/email/telephone number) are shown in a prominent place. When we visit a corporate site and the site only has email contact details, it gives the impression of being less solid and more likely to disappear with you rmoney. With a church website, people need to know the physical location, even if it is a house church.
- Photographs: (I am conscious that at present the church website I am working on does not fulfil this criteria). But there should be photographs of the congregation and not of the church building. The people are the church, not the building and smiling people have a very strong impact.
- Mission statement: It could be argued that a jargon-filled, wordy statement might put off seekers, but for those Christians coming into the area looking for a church it is important that they can see where a church stands. Perhaps place this on another page with one or two lines on the front page.
- Updated news: Finally, as this website is a current reflection of what is happening at the church, it needs to be updated regularly. This may mean that the weekly or monthly news letter or bulletin is posted online. But something needs to be updated or visitors will not return.
Monvee took the webinar
Their system continues to look intriguing and possibly a good match with re-engaging the 45 and less or non-regular attendees to compliment Alternative Worship. It is very Web 3.0 which is good for us techies but they are addressing how to be friendly to those less computer savvy. Pricing right now is somewhat affordable over all especially since they are waiving a lot of the fees they will charge in the future, in exchange for participating in the beta. Beta pricing is based on % of annual budget, # of average monthly adult attendees, % of those we plan to include & reach -- formula sounds difficult but it is not.
Will continue to research and see where it takes me. They stress "disciples need to be handcrafted, they can't be mass produced."
I'm communicating with Jamie George @ Monvee who is Episcopalian herself and trying to build up a ministry to the unchurched / youth / Gen X. So there is a good level of understanding of cultural/church issues vs. only evangelic mega-church or new seed churches. Which has been an issue for some of the other tools and ChMS's I've looked at.

Photography needed
One of the areas that modern CMS's tend to have added is upload/linking a face to a name. Some people including me have a really hard time remembering peoples names and faces. We need to go about starting to photograph members faces (head & shoulders) and/or having members send in their pictures to the office via email.
Fun with database fields & data tracking
Membership status?
We have a lot of options here that we probably need to discuss, define and decide which terms and who they apply to for the database (our use) and need for reporting under Parochial rules. So there is a toss-up having too few options does not give us a clear picture of where we are at and having too many tends to leave people lost between the cracks. We can juggle other fields/lists as well if that is a better option i.e. split contribution and steward info separate from membership so there is less of a hierarchy of Steward, Contributor, Active Member, Attendee, etc.

- Active member
- Inactive member
- Member Non-resident
- Prospective Member (or Returning visitor or Seeker or Visitor 3 or more times)

Worked on a few things...
- Worked in the office today -- trying to collect marketing collaterl that a visitor might get and consider assembling a "welcome kit" to pre-package.
- Cut up a bunch of ads out of the 3 main African-American newspapers that have church ads to see what they list and how they market themselves.
- Took some of the info from the Booklet on Organizations and used it to continue to refine navigation on the next revised web site and to drop text into the template.
- Worked on the database a litte in the office but more so from home tonight. Spent a chunk of time figuring out custom fields in ACS. Now I just need to do some serious data entry/integrity check.
- I need to figure out the paradigm of Groups/Activities inside ACS People so I can enter that data as well.
- Spoke with LArry from People Connect -- got a few more resources from him to help with collecting info on visitors & how our data would need to look like for them to easily import it.

Parish Vital Signs Survey
I received this in a 2008 Vestry Day training at Grace Cathedral. As we look at tools this might be another / different option. Issue with any survey to judge impact you need to do it a few times -- as memories often have rose colored glasses.
Taking Your Parish Vital Signs
Here is a simple tool to enable you and the leadership of your church to measure and reflect on your parish’s general health and vitality. Below are twenty questions that explore various facets of your life together.
Task: Read each question and assign a number to each between 0 and 10, with 10 as the highest, signifying excellence. Then add up the total responses (0-40 = Should you close your doors?; 40-80 = Needs parish EMT; 80-120 = Fair but needs coaching; 120-160 = Good, keep going; 160-200 = Excellent, where can I join?)
There is a powerful, caring ministry to members in need. People know who is hurting and respond meaningfully.
Parishioners have a genuine air of joy, hope, confidence and ease with each other and others.
People are truly appreciated and thanked for what they do.
Parishioners have an active spiritual life at home and at church.
People can deal with conflict openly, allow disagreement and still love, learn from and respect those who differ from them.
People are discovering their gifts for ministry and are encouraged to use them.
The congregation is fairly free of a critical spirit.
The needs of children and teenagers are known and included in the life of the church.
Parishioners feel deep anger at the injustices in society that hurt people and move to act.
People who visit could think: “These folks really have something special and I want to join!”
The community is generous in pledging and sharing, living out of a theology of abundance vs. scarcity.
Members have a real personal relationship with Christ.
Parishioners are eager to share their real lives and experiences of God with others to lead them gently to Christ.
Clergy, staff, vestry, choir, altar guild, etc. relations are open and mutually respectful, a sign of God’s Presence.
You get a sense that you are not with a bunch of Pharisees but forgiven publicans whose lives are lived in gratitude to God’s love.
These people know how to play and are fun to be with.
The church leadership and members have good self-esteem and a clear sense of boundaries.
The community thrives on open communication not back biting triangulation or gossip.
The community is open to change while keeping faith with the past and their clear identity.
This church is a place where the Spirit is contagious.

Join the Choir Sunday - Lift Every Voice & Sing
Concept that you can show up at 9:15, get on the robes and go through some practice time with the choir/music director. When service is over get your picture taken in the robes and let people share that with friends & family. We'd give tools to people i.e. email w/graphic to share that they could send to friends and family to invite them that sunday.
We could video or audio record the singing and post online so people could share that with friends.
We could do a gospel lunch/brunch if the response was good after the first time.
Would need to pick hymns/gospel songs that are widely known and in a normal key. Might encourage a few attendees to join the choir.

ACS People is back up and running
I called ACS and the file was ready -- they did not email or it was "lost". Downloaded and imported the backup. Learning the system while updating the member record information to the office copy.
There is a lot of work to be done to sync and improve the data we collect and back fill in things that should be recorded so that they can be reported. Then we need to standardize how certain items are recorded.
One area I already see as a huge impediment to communication to the 18 - 40 (or even older) generation is they don't get emailed or mailed items since they are often listed under the parents physical address or email. I have to learn the process to split them out of the household but keep the familial connection.
UPDATE: Completed the first round of changes transferring info into the database from the maual edits to the office's copy of the member directory.

USPS - Postage Options
Do we have a Mailing Permit for bulk mail? Are we setup/trained for it?
Do we have a way to use the PC postage meter solutions if unwilling to purchase a postage machine.
Two possible PC based solutions:
• Mailing Permit Imprints
If you're a business or non-profit mailer with fairly standard, cyclical mailings you should consider a mailing permit. For an annual fee you can set up a centralized postage payment account with the Postal Service. When you use a Mailing Permit account you print a permit imprint indicia on your mail pieces. This type of indicia simply indicates 'Postage Paid" without specifying an amount and your mailing account is deducted on the basis of weight and standardization of your mailing.
• Postage Meters
With the latest technology advances meters have become even more popular as a convenient way to pay for postage and track costs. Meters are machines that are leased from commercial manufacturers in cooperation with the Postal Service that allow you to dial-up and download postage directly into the machine and then print it as you need it. Meters print postage meter indicia indicating the postage paid directly onto the mailpiece or onto an approved label. A particular advantage of meters is the ability to print the exact rate you need for your particular mailing.
• PC Postage™ Products
If you prefer doing business from your computer, consider PC Postage software products. Like postage meters, PC Postage products and services are available from commercial providers in cooperation with the Postal Service. With PC Postage software you can purchase postage over the Internet and use your standard desktop printer to print the PC Postage indicia directly onto envelopes or labels for your mail or packages. There are great additional features like printing variable rates, integration with scales and related online applications, and postage expense reports.

Simple printed Events Calendar
To develop a simple and update-able rolling monthly calendar on a one sheet that is in a calendar format shows upcoming events. 8.5x11 or legal size. Printed on colored paper. Info taken from the updated web site calendar.
Ideally it would include a contact me form on the back for visitors or ministry/prayer + room for mailer/mailing.
Easy enough for the office to drop in the mail at least once a month to all members.

Got side tracked today on survey stuff
Spent the afternoon trying to develop a quick survey that might work to get a pulse on the congregation and fill in some needed areas of information in prelude to triaging some things and a further deeper study/survey to be done later. This is the 100th post.

Testing out Podbean
Hosting and RSS feeding the audio sermons is going to be a task where we need to try and simplify what we are doing while watching that we don't spend money unnecessarily. So looking both into plug-in options for WordPress and outside services like Podbean that allow hosting (& free hosting) of files with RSS feeds, etc already pre-set for us.
